AMPK in Sickness and Health - From Molecule to Man

Conference in Copenhagen August 10 - August 15 2008

Realizing that AMPK dys-regulation could be both a cause of a variety of diseases such as diabetes, obesity, atherosclerosis, cardiomyopathies and cancer as well as being target for their therapy has made AMPK a highly interesting signal component of the cell.

In addition, AMPK has been shown to influence various cellular events such as metabolism, apoptosis, oxidative stress, mitochondrial biogenesis and to influence the transcriptional rate of a vide variety of genes.

AMPK is activated in plurality of organs by a variety of stimuli. Thus, AMPK is regulated by cellular stress, as seen during exercise or oxygen/fuel deprivation, by several hormones (adiponectin, adrenaline and leptin) as well as by known drugs, such as TZDs and metformin. These findings collectively make AMPK one of the most exiting new molecules in biological and medical sciences within this period of time.

In 2008 we are hosting the 5th international symposium on AMPK “AMPK in Sickness and Health - from Molecule to Man”.
