Group coaching as narrative-collaborative practice
A randomized control study + qualitative studies of young sports talents
The intervention focuses on career development, self-reflection and personal growth of young sports talents, who intend to integrate their sports career, educational demands and private life. Via stimulating co-creative reflective practice and mutual engagement of the participants, the coach helps to create an environment where all participants can unfold their resources, develop their reflective space and share and discover new perspective to common or individual challenges.
The main objective is to show
-
how group coaching on a narrative-collaborative basis has an impact on identity and self-concept of young sports talents in general and
-
how group coaching has a positive influence on their motivation, on stress coping and action control in specific
Methods
-
Randomized control study based on 8 x 1½ h sessions over 12 weeks (N=27 divided in groups of 4-5) + second intervention (relaxation) + control group. Pre, intermediate and post assessment (evaluating level of stress/anxiety, motivation and action control).
-
Qualitative-narrative studies based on 2 interviews/per selected clients (intermediate and post).
The research takes place at a Team Denmark high school where the talents have the opportunity to prolong their high school education with one year.
The research is coordinated with the PhD research project of Johan Wikman Development of an Evidence-based Sport Psychological Training Program for Young Elite Athletes.
